‘Dry day’ declared on Vijaya Dashami in all 3 districts of the valley

October 18: Exercising powers conferred under Section 52(I) of the Assam Excise Act, 2000, ‘Dry Day’ was declared on 19 October in all the three districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi. Dr S Lakshmanan, the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar in the capacity of District Magistrate declared closure of all liquor licensed premises in Cachar district on October 19 for preservation of peace and tranquility during ‘Vijaya Dashami’.

In a similar notification issued by District Magistrate, in-charge, FR Laskar of Hailakandi, it was stated that all IMFL off and on shops, country spirit shops will remain closed in Hailakandi on October 19 on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami for maintenance of peace, security, and discipline.

The District Magistrate of Karimganj too issued a notification under Section 52(I) of the Assam Excise Act, 2000, declaring ‘Dry Day’on 19 October. It was further stated that “No sale, consumption or possession of any intoxicant should take place on that day. Violation of this order shall be dealt with seriously under the relevant provisions of the Assam Excise Act, 2000.”

The main text of the notification iuused in the three districts is all the more same. It was notified that “All country spirit shops, IMFL, warehouses, bonded warehouses, IFL, ‘ON’ or ‘OFF’ beer, ‘ON’, club, ‘ON’ licenses will remain closed on Friday and no sale or service or consumption of liquor in licensed premises will be allowed on 19 October.”
