UN was born out of war to end war, today that wasn’t achieved: UN Secretary General
Feb. 26: Defying the repeated plea of United Nations, Russia launched an attack on Ukraine. After Russia vetoed the UN Security Council resolution that deplored UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres wrote on twitter: “The UN was born out of war to end war. Today, that objective was not achieved. But we must never give up. We must give peace another chance.”
“Humanitarian needs in Ukraine are multiplying by the hour. Civilians are dying. At least 100,000 Ukrainians have already reportedly fled their homes. UN staff are scaling up the delivery of life-saving support. Their safety and freedom of movement must be guaranteed,” wrote the Secretary General in another tweet.
In his speech, Antonio Guterres said, “In Ukraine, UN staff are on the ground, scaling up the delivery of life-saving support, on both sides of the line of contact. Their safety and freedom of movement must be guaranteed. The protection of civilians must be priority number one.”
