Two Covid-19 +ve patients dies at SMCH on Wednesday
April 21: After a day’s lull, 2 more deaths were registered at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) in the last 24 hours. Informing the same, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH said that out of the 2 deceased at SMCH, 01 of them is from Silchar in Cachar district while the another is from Ramkrishnagar in Karimganj. Those who died during the last 24 hours at SMCH were identified as:
- Surja Mohan Das (56) from Ashram Road, Silchar was admitted at SMCH on 17 April. He died at 10.05 AM on 21 April, 2021.
- Bappa Biswas (43) from Ramakrishnagar in Karimganj was admitted on 19 April. He breathed his last at 3.30 PM on 21 April, 2021.
Though these two deceased were COVID-19 positive patients, yet it cannot be ascertained as of now, whether the cause of their death is due to coronavirus. Their reports have been referred to State Death Audit Board as per norms.
ICMR has issued a guideline which states that death of all COVID-19 patients should not be considered as COVID-19 deaths unless the person was primarily dying due to the virus. It is In this connection that ICMR has created a format that needs to be filled up while assessing the cause of death of a patient. As such, the State Health Department has constituted a ‘Death Audit Board’ that will decide if the death of a COVID-19 positive patient can be attributed to COVID-19 infection.
