Trial of Covaxin on children to begin at AIIMS, New Delhi from 7 June

June 7: Clinical trials of the indigenous Bharat Biotech’s Covid-19 vaccine “Covaxin” on children at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Until now, AIIMS Patna has started the Paediatric clinical trial of the Covaxin. The trial made by Bharat Biotech to see if it is suitable for children between two and 18 years old. Till now, the vaccines being used in India – Covaxin, Covishield and Sputnik V – have not been approved for use on children.

On 11 May, Covaxin has been approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), for Phase II/III clinical trials in the age group of 2 to 18 years. The trial will study aspects like–Safety of the vaccine in this age group (children), and types of adverse reactions and their causes. The trial will also examine the vaccine’s ability to prompt an immune response.

Experts have warned that a possible third wave can bring as much devastation as the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic if enough people are not vaccinated against the virus, and that children could be its prime target. Many states have started preparations for the anticipated third wave. They are now focussing on creating healthcare infrastructure for children.
