Those teachers who take salary but doesn’t go to school are enemies of the society: CM

If the current drop in enrollment continues, govt schools may have to be closed after 10 years

April 17: “A good teaching environment with efficient & dedicated teachers can play a big role in development journey that has picked momentum recently. Teachers shall know they’re in a noble profession & I won’t mind calling those not attending school as enemies of society.” This was said by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma during a programme at Diphu in Karbi Anglong recently.

The Chief Minister said, “It is indeed unfortunate that after drawing salary from the government, many teachers are irregular to school. While accepting appointment letters, TET teachers should introspect whether they would be able to discharge the duties of teaching with full devotion and dedication.”

He added that as per the available data, thousands of teachers were appointed in the state, yet the scenario is government schools was very dismal. Expenditure in education has gone high, but the quality of education has gone down. “The trend which is prevailing now is- We want everything from the government, but without giving anything back to the society. I have in a meeting with SSA on yesterday have seen that, if the trend of downward trend of students in government school continues, then within the next ten years all such schools shall have to be closed. The teachers will then have to be compelled to accept Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS). The scenario has even not improved after amalgamation of the schools.”

“Yearly Sarba Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) spends Rs.2000 crore. State government spends 6% of GDP which roughly accounts Rs.30,000 crore annually. Teachers are demanding enhanced dearness allowance (DA), travelling allowance (TA), besides increase in salary. However, who is responsible or accountable for the plummeting number of students in government schools,” added the Chief Minister.

Talking about the number of students in government school in Guwahati, the Chief Minister said, “In Guwahati, the scenario is very critical. The number of students in government schools in Guwahati has decreased to such an extent, that these schools may be closed down soon.”

“People are now more inclined to admit their children in the private schools. For educating a single child in a private school, a person has to spend Rs.4000 to Rs.6000 per month. A Grade IV Staff gets Rs.12,000 as salary. If he has two children, then for their education in private school, he/she has to spend Rs.12,000. So to run his family, that person collects bribe from people after going to the office. Again, if a son/daughter of a government officer cannot clear the entrance for MBBS, then he sends his son/daughter to study in a private Medical College in Bengaluru, for which annually he would require Rs.25,000,00. But he gets salary of Rs.70,000. That means, in a year, he earns around Rs.10 lakh. So where from he gets the rest of the money for educating his child in a costly private college? It’s natural for that employee to get involved in corruption,” said that Chief Minister.
