SMCH conducts fire mock drill at NICU to boost emergency preparedness

way2barak, April 30:– In a significant step towards enhancing disaster readiness and safety protocols, a comprehensive Fire Mock Drill was conducted on Tuesday at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). The event was organized with the dedicated support of the Fire and Emergency Services, Silchar, and saw active participation from various departments within SMCH.
The drill was part of a nationwide initiative on fire safety awareness in healthcare facilities, following directives from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW). Designed to test the preparedness of hospital staff in responding to potential fire emergencies, the exercise simulated real-time evacuation procedures, fire response mechanisms, and inter-departmental coordination under emergency conditions.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital and controlling officer of this mock drill event , lauded the collaborative effort and underlined the critical importance of such preparedness exercises. He emphasized that the safety of patients, especially vulnerable neonates, and the hospital’s ability to respond promptly to fire hazards are non-negotiable priorities. Dr. Gupta elaborated that routine mock drills not only instill confidence among hospital personnel but also ensure seamless coordination during actual crises.
He further stated that the NICU, being one of the most sensitive zones in a healthcare setting, must always remain equipped with a robust emergency response plan. “Such drills enhance situational awareness and allow us to evaluate our readiness while identifying areas of improvement,” Dr. Gupta remarked.
He also expressed his gratitude towards the personals from State Fire and Emergency Services Departments for extending their support to make the drill a successful event.
The initiative was widely appreciated by the medical fraternity and reinforced the institution’s commitment to patient safety, disaster management, and adherence to national healthcare guidelines.
