An overview of the flood situation in Silchar, writes Nirmalendu Kar Purkayastha

May 23: Recently the people of Silchar has experienced torrential rain over past fifteen days, which led to flood in and around the town. All the rivers and tributaries in Barak Valley crossed the danger level. The river water was overflowing and inundated the low lying areas and adjoining places in Silchar. At many places, the embankments have been breached. People especially, the aged opined that that they have not faced such a flood situation over past 12 to 15 years.

However, the situation is now returning to normalcy gradually leaving flood victims in a state of despair despair. At the same time, massive relief materials are distributed amongst the flood victims.

Keeping aside situation created by the fury of nature, I am drawing your kind attention to the good governance for which that was no water logging in Shillongpatty and National Highway point inspite of this severe flood situation. For last many years, these places used to get water logged continuously during the rainy season. But this year, such a situation has not occurred because of the developmental work undertaken by the government.

In this flood scenario, Pumps have been deployed in various places of Silchar to drain out the stagnant water. Chief Minister, Guardian Minister, MP, MLA’s & District administration have worked in cohesive manner as a team to address the misery of the people. It also needs mention here that in the past two to three years, massive development work like roads, culverts, drainage, pavements etc have been built as per a well designed plan. And  because of these concerted developmental works, there was no water logging in the heart of the town. So it goes without saying that strong commitment, leadership and willingness to work always leads to better civic life.
