March 4: Here are the major events that occurred on 4 March….

  • 4 March, 1849: Bethune’ College was established as a pioneer of women’s education in India. It was founded in 1849 by John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune. In 1879, it was developed into first women’s college in India.
  • 4 March, 1906: Hakim Abdul Majid, who founded the company started his medial dispensary under the name of Hamdard Dawakhana at Delhi. Hamdard Laboratories is a Unani and Ayurvedic pharmaceutical company in India
  • 4 March, 1925: Death anniversary of shri Jyotirindranath Tagore who was a great Bengali poet. He was also a playwright, a musician and a painter. He played a major role in the cultivating talents of his younger brother, Shri Rabindranath Tagore.
  • 4 March, 1933: Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated to his first term as president in Washington, D.C. He pledged to lead the country out of the Great Depression
  • 4 March, 1939: Death anniversary of Lala Har Dayal, great Indian revolutionary and freedom fighter. He founded the Gadar Party in America. He turned down a career in the Indian Civil Services. His thoughts and acumen inspired many Indians living overseas in Canada and the USA to fight against British Imperialism.
  • 4 March, 1951: The 1951 Asian Games, which were the first games organized from 4th to 11th March 1951. About 500 athletes participated in the program in 57 different events. The 1951 Asian games were scheduled for 1950, but were postponed till 1951 due to delays in preparation.
  • 4 March, 1989: The Louvre Pyramid designed by I. M. Pei is inaugurated by French President Francois Mitterrand
  • 4 March, 2009: The International Criminal Court issues an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur becoming the first sitting head of state to be indicted
  • 4 March, 2019: US Democrats announce a wide-ranging corruption investigation into President Donald Trump.
