Protest by various student groups against Mizo atrocities continue in Silchar

July 29: A day earlier, the students had burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister of Mizoram near Mizoram House in Silchar and warned the Mizoram government in strong language. On Thursday again, another student group warned the Mizoram government through a rally in the heart of Silchar town. The student movement was led by Aritra Dhar, former General Secretary of Assam University, Subhasish Choudhury, Ratnaraj Acharya, Atendra Senapati and Bishwarup Purkayastha. The rally started from the capital point of Silchar which went across Shillongpatti via Ambikapatty and ended near the statue of Khudiram Basu.

At the end of the protest march, Aritra Dhar said, “We want to warn the Mizoram government to withdraw from the encroached land of Assam as soon as possible. Our patience should not be tested. The purpose of our gathering here today is to pay our homage to our dead Assam police personnel. It’s to make it clear that we are always with them and that we are all together in this struggle.”

Subhasish Choudhury further said, “Weapon and drug trafficking are rampant in Mizoram. Nothing better can be expected from them. The Mizo mob has been able to execute this massacre of Assam police with sophisticated weapons by collecting them through their illegal channels. The Indian government needs to be vigilant because these barbaric mobs will not hesitate to attack them in the future. The trade in illegal drugs and arms must be stopped on Mizoram’s soil.”

Vishwaroop Purkayastha said, “Such a stalemate has been going on at the border for the last several months but no government has solved it then. The Indian government should have acted long ago. I hope the government will take the necessary steps and ensure that it will not happen again in the coming days.”

Infact, the atrocities perpetrated upon Assam Police by Mizo forces along with the Mizo armed miscreants on last Monday which led to death of six policemen and several injured was severely resented by the people of three districts of Barak Valley. Protest movements are being organised at several parts of the valley.
