Leaders from other political parties will not be allowed to join BJP in Assam: Ranjit Dass

August 21: In a significant development, state BJP has now come up with a concrete decision that leaders from other political parties will not be allowed to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. In a letter issued to all the district Presidents of the party, Kishore Upadhayay, General Secretary of Assam Pradesh BJP stated that leaders of other political parties, except those from Bodoland areas will not be anymore allowed to join BJP.

It was however mentioned that people from other walks of life from Assam except those in the politics can very well join the BJP. It was stated that, “People other than politicians like those from Linguistic & literary field, art & culture, education, sports, agriculture and commerce etc. can join the party.” Dass, however, added that his party was open to political leaders from Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD) joining it.

Reacting to this decision, Ranjit Kumar Dass, State President of BJP said that “The Assam BJP has closed its doors for leaders of other political parties, except those from Bodoland areas. BJP veterans, who have toiled for decades to build the party in Assam, are feeling insecured now that Congress’ sitting Rajya Sabha MP Bhubaneswar Kalita, Santius Kujur and former Congress minister Gautam Roy are all in the BJP.

Ranjit Dass said that till now, a total of about 17 lakh people have taken membership of the saffron party recently and that Assam was way ahead of other states as far as the membership numbers were concerned.

Speculations  are rife that the joining of Gautam Roy as a member of BJP was not liked either by many of the party veterans nor by its supporters. He added that the decision had been taken in view of the BJP’s ongoing organisational elections. The letter regarding this decision was issued by Secretary, BJP Assam Pradesh on 21 August, 2019. Since then, it seems to be celebration time for BJP workers and supporters who are welcoming this decision of the party.
