Volatile situation at Silchar Polytechnic centering election of Students’ Union

way2barak, Dec.6: An untoward incident broke out at Silchar Polytechnic today centering election to Students’ Union. Though the voting went on peacefully in the morning on Tuesday, yet situation became adverse during the counting in the later afternoon, when clashes broke out between two groups of students. Police reached the spot and had to apply mild force to bring the situation under control.

Later on, expressing his views, Sanjib Singh, Principal of Silchar Polytechnic informed that towards the evening, after results of the election was declared, suddenly someone from outside threw a stone in which a student was injured. This resulted in a chaos and the students gathered to find out the person who did this. The situation soon became tensed and the police was called in. The injured student was then sent to Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) for treatment.

On the other hand, sources revealed that clashes broke out between two groups of students after the results of the election was declared in which a student identified as Mrinmoy Sangma of 3rd semester was injured. To disperse the crowd, police had to resort to mild lathi charge. Meanwhile, one group of students assembled near the main gate of Silchar Polytechnic and raised the demand of a proper enquiry into the matter. They also alleged that the police involved in lathi charge upon them and expressed strong resentment at it.
