Member of IT Cell of Silchar Congress apprehended for “objectionable” FB posts
June 3: Since long, he was found to be very active in social media and put up posts regularly in his Facebook wall. His posts are often critical of the ministers and the policies of the government. On the basis of such a complaint, Abir Choudhury, member of the IT Cell of Silchar District Congress was apprehended on Thursday. He has been charged with hurting the feelings of others and posting obscenities.
The police complaint was lodged by Amitesh Chakraborty, President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. In his complaint, Amitesh Chakraborty stated that from the last 6 to 7 months, Abir Choudhury has been posting offensive remarks against both the Union and the State ministers in his Facebook wall. He further alleged that Abir Choudhury regularly mocks the Prime Minister and the Home Minister in his posts. On the basis of his complaint, Cachar Police apprehended Abir Choudhury on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Jyotirindra Dey, Spokesperson of Silchar District Congress Committee condemned the arrest of Abir Choudhury and said, “Freedom of speech and the right to express one’s opinion have become meaningless in the country.” He further said that it is quite natural that as a member of the IT Cell of Congress, a person will write against the ministers, criticise their policies on social media. The Congress leader stated that all the social media posts of Abir Choudhury are political statements.
Expressing his views, Abir Choudhury’s advocate, Soumen Choudhury said that social media posts made by his client does not contain anything related to obscenity. As per sources, Abir Choudhury has been booked under section 297 of IPC and 67 of IT Act.
