Longest river ropeway in India over Brahmaputra inaugurated in Guwahati

August 24: The 2km long Guwahati-North Guwahati ropeway connecting the northern and southern banks of the Brahmaputra River was formally inaugurated on Thursday by Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in presence of GDD minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya.

The ropeway was conceived by GoA as an enabling infra project for additional all-purpose transportation between two banks of river Brahmaputra. The 1820 mtr ropeway, built at Rs 56 crrore shall accommodate 30 passengers in a cabin & complete the travel in 8 minutes. Passengers will be able to avail daily, weekly and monthly passes as well.

In a tweet, Cabinet Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “I highly appreciate GDD Minister Sri @SBhttachrya for having put enormous efforts to complete the Guwahati Ropeway project. I am humbled at his gesture of inviting me and giving the opportunity to inaugurate this iconic project. Proud & happy that I have the privilege of inaugurating Guwahati Ropeway, seeds of which were sown when I was GDD Minister. This is one of the most advanced & longest river crossing Aerial Tramway systems in India. My compliments to people of Assam!”

The project was initiated in 2006 by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authorities which saw its logical conclusion in 2020.
