It’s not our wish, but if Brahmaputra calls for separate Barak, it is better to secede: ACKHSA
Oct. 23: In response to a statement made by former President of Asom Sahitya Sabha, Nagen Saikia about separating Barak Valley from Assam, the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA) stated that “if Brahmaputra Valley regards us a cancer, then it is better to strive for separate statehood.” The members of ACKHSA, was, however, quick to add that it is not their wish to get separated, but when “people over there do not treat us as brothers, we too have no other option.”
ACKHSA also made it clear that they too want a state of peaceful coexistence with the people of Brahmaputra Valley, but such efforts must be made from both sides. Former President of Asom Sahitya Sabha, Nagen Saikia earlier also stated that though he is personally not convinced with the choice of ascribing a separate statehood to Barak Valley, yet, looking into the present situation in the state, he said that a status of a separate state would bring to an end the heated situation in the state.
Taking a dig at Nagen Saikia, ACKHSA during a press meet on Saturday stated that instead of giving press statement about separating Barak from Assam, he should propose this at the government level.
