High Court upheld the Act of 2020 to repeal Madrassa Education Procincialisation Acts in Assam

Feb. 4: A Division Bench of Hon’ble Gauhati High Court in a landmark judgment delivered today upheld the Act of 2020 to repeal Madrassa Education Procincialisation Acts and also upheld all other notifications to convert 397 provincialised Madrassas to general educational institutions. This was tweeted by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday.

A Bill to repeal provincialisation of Madrassas was tabled in Assam Legislative Assembly on 30 December, 2020. Informing this, State Health, Finance & Education Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma then stated, “Once the Bill is passed, the practice of running Madrassa by the Government in Assam will come to an end, a practice which was started by Muslim League govt in pre-Independence Assam, in 1935.”

In a tweet,  Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “Glad that the Bill pertaining to repeal of Provincialisation of Madrassas has been passed, even as Indian National Congress – Assam and All India United Democratic Front – AIUDF expectedly staged a walkout in Assembly. All Madrassas, being run under government stands converted into regular educational institute with effect from April 1, 2021.”
