Gandhi Jayanti celebrated in Cachar, Swacchata karmis felicitated

Oct.2: Coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti, Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, Keerthi Jalli, visited the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre here on Friday. Sumit Sattawan, ADC, Dr. Sudip Jyoti Das, Joint Director, Health Services, Rahul Ghose, DPM (NHM) and Suman Choudhury, DME (NHM) accompanied the Deputy Commissioner. Jalli took stock of the hospital and interacted with the doctors and paramedical staff to know firsthand about the problems they are facing in providing treatment to cancer patients, especially during the pandemic situation.

“We should respect Gandhiji and abide by his ideals and principles. He believed in serving others and we all should try to work together for the betterment of society,” she quipped. Appreciating the efforts of doctors of the hospital, Jalli said, “We have been able to fight cancer since we have a team of efficient doctors, nurses and staff.”

The Deputy Commissioner also expressed her gratitude to the doctors, nurses and paramedical staff for their excellent services to the COVID afflicted cancer patients under the able leadership of Padmashree Dr.Ravi Kannan. As a mark of respect, the Deputy Commissioner and other senior officials felicitated the swacchata karmis with uttariya and packet of sweets.

Earlier, in the morning, the concluding ceremony of two-year long 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi was organised by the administration at the office complex of Deputy Commissioner. The programme started with lighting of traditional lamp by Deputy Commissioner Jalli, District Development Commissioner, Jessica Lalsim, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Rajib Roy, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Lolita Rongpipi and Additional Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan.

The Deputy Commissioner and other senior officials and employees paid floral tribute at the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi. Jalli spoke about the illustrious life of Mahatma Gandhi and urged everyone to follow the principles and discipline maintained by the great man during his lifetime. Eulogising Gandhiji for his noble thoughts, the Deputy Commissioner appealed to one and all to inculcate behavioural changes vis-a-vis treat everyone with kindness and treat everyone equally irrespective of caste, sex, colour or creed and make the world a better place to live in.
District Development Commissioner, Lalsim, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Roy and Additional Deputy Commissioner, Rongpipi also dwelt at length on the various facets of Gandhiji and his contribution to the freedom struggle for independence from British Raj.

‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ has kicked off in the district on Gandhi Jayanti and will conclude on the International Girl Child Day on October 11. Towards this end, a slew of activities have been taken up by the Social Welfare department in association with line departments such as Education and Health.

District Social Welfare Officer, Saswati Shome informed that awareness programme was conducted at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya under Tapang Block on Friday. Elaborating on the scheme, Shome said, “It is a campaign aimed at generating awareness and improving the efficiency of welfare services intended for girls in India.” The monitorable targets under this campaign are improving the sex ratio birth in female gender; reducing gender differentials under 5 years and increasing enrollment of girls in secondary education.

Later, prizes were distributed to the first, second and third prize winners of essay and art competitions held amongst various schools during the observance of week-long programme marking the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. In the essay competition, Prantik Rudra Paul, student of Class VI of Adharchand Higher Secondary, Silchar secured the first position, while Lakhan Acharjee, student of Class VIII of Jogai Mathura MP School, Lakhipur secured the second position and Saniya Akhtar Laskar, student of Class V of Chailtakandi LP School, Udharband, the third spot.

In the art competition, Amrit Das, a student of Class V of 71 No.Kathal Bagan LP School, Salchapra block secured first position, Moti Tati, a student of Class V of 31 No.Kalain Garden School, Katigorah secured second position and Anusree Baishanb of Class VII from Athal Basti ME School bagged the third spot. Meanwhile, patriotic songs were played in the wee hours through Fixed Loud Speaker system of the Regional Office of Information and Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone.
