Home Minister Amit Shah & BJP President JP Nadda reaches Assam; holds meeting to tackle flood problem

way2barak, Oct.7: Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda arrived in Guwahati on Friday evening on a three-day tour to Northeast. Earlier, Amit Shah was received at the LGBI Airport, Guwahati by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma along with other ministers. Later on, both the Chief Minister and Union Home Minister received BJP National President JP Nadda on his arrival in Guwahati.

In Guwahati today, in the presence of BJP national president JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah the Core Committee meeting of BJP was held. In the meeting, it was resolved to continue to strengthen BJP in Assam and work for welfare of people.

Earlier, immediately after reaching Guwahati, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the reasons responsible for recurring floods & steps taken by the Govt to tackle the problem. The Home Minister emphasised a long-term solution to the perennial issue of floods. He also stressed inter- ministerial and inter- departmental coordination for making Assam flood free. Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika was also present at the meeting.

During the review meeting, it was emphasised that while 4500 KM of embankments were constructed during 50s and 60s, no storage reservoirs were constructed. Also no significant investment in flood control was made from the 70s till 2010. Through a power point presentation, it was shown that  majority of embankments were now more than 50 years old.

It was also opined that investment in flood control through raising & strengthening (R&S) of embankments refocused since 2017-18 only. Capital Expenditure incurred of Rs 2,264.83 cr from 2017-18 to 2021-22. Further, it was highlighted that schemes worth Rs 1,476.1 cr were taken up under SDRF for flood protection & mitigation from 2017-18 onwards.

During their visit, During his visit, both Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President JP Nadda shall take part in the inauguration of new BJP office in Guwahati and also a Karyakarta Convention.
