April 9: Here are the major events that occurred on 9 April….

  • 9 April, 1783: On this day, Tipu Sultan fought with the British and drove them out of Badnore. The battle was part of the Second Anglo-Mysore war which was started by Tipu’s father Hyder Ali who died during the course of the battle.
  • 9 April, 1945: Execution of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, anti-Nazi dissident and spy, by the Nazi regime.

  • 9 April, 1948: Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan, one of the finest actresses of Hindi film industry was born on this day. She made her debut as a teenager in 1963 and went on to win 8 Filmfare Awards under different categories. She married megastar Amitabh Bachchan in the year 1973 and restricted her work in movies after that. She started her career in politics as a member of “Samajwadi Party” and represented the party as a member of parliament (MP) in Rajya Sabha.
  • 9 April, 1963: Churchill becomes 1st honorary US citizen.

  • 9 April, 1965: Fighting breaks out in the Rann of Kutch between Indian and Pakistani troops. Pakistan attacked Indian borders, Sardar Post, Chhar Bet and Beria Bet, this was manned by the State Armed Police Batallions. In Kutch launched its 8th Infantry Division supported by two regiments of M47/48 Pattons.
  • 9 April, 1967: The first Boeing 737 (a 100 series) makes its maiden flight.

  • 9 April, 1992:  A U.S. Federal Court finds former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega guilty of drug and racketeering charges. He is sentenced to 30 years in prison.
  • 9 April, 2003: Baghdad falls to U.S. forces, ending the invasion of Iraq, but resulting in widespread looting.
  • 9 April, 2013: A 6.1–magnitude earthquake strikes Iran killing 32 people and injuring over 850 people.
