FIR lodged against Himanta for raising ‘pro-Bangladesh’ slogan in the Assembly
December 4: An FIR has been filed against Assam’s Finance minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma by a group of students of Cotton University in Assam on Tuesday. He has been accused of promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds. The FIR requested that a case be filed against Himanta under Section 153 (A) of the IPC.
According to the FIR filed by six students of Cotton University, it was alleged that the minister has chanted ‘Jai Bangladesh’ slogans in the floor of Assam Legislative Assembly recently. The six students of Cotton varsity in Guwahati – Pranjal Kalita, Jintu Thakuria, Amlanjyoti Dewry, Deepjyoti Das, Rajshekhar Kalita and Hirakjyoti Borah lodged the FIR at Panbazar Police Station on Tuesday. However, said since the incident happened in the assembly, which comes under the jurisdiction of Dispur police station, the complaint has been sent to them for consideration.
“This incident took place at a time when some members from from from opposition benches were protesting against introduction of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. Such utterance by the accused person has the potential to promote enmity between different groups residing in the state on the ground of race and language,” said the FIR. “This is not the only such instance. Through a series of remarks, he (Himanta) has been trying to create division in the society,” the FIR further added. A copy of which was sent to the media by the students.
