Barak Valley registers biggest spike of 421 positive cases on Wednesday

August 12: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Wednesday, the number of fresh cases again was on the rise in the valley. A total of 421 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley. It needs mention here that on Tuesday, Barak Valley registered 231 positive cases.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Wednesday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 191 positive cases   (It was 150 on Tuesday)
  • Karimganj: 141 positive cases  (It was 51 on Tuesday)
  • Hailakandi: 89 positive cases (It was 30 on Tuesday)

On Wednesday, 191 new cases of coronavirus positive were reported from across Cachar district. Out of this, 177 were detected as COVID-19 positive during Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), whereas 14 of them were found positive in RT-PCR Test (2 slots). With this, the district tally of coronavirus cases have now reached 3483. At present, more than 1400 are active cases in the district. A little over 1900 patients were discharged from various hospitals and Covid Care Centres in Cachar. Further, the death tally of the state has gone upto 11.

Cachar registered two more COVID-19 deaths. Both the patients were admitted in the ICU at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH). They died on Tuesday and their deaths were certified by the State Death Audit Board as COVID-19 deaths. This was disclosed by Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH.

Dr. Gupta further said that, 2 deceased were identified as Namita Dey (53) from Sarat Pally, Silchar. She was admitted at SMCH on 30 July. Apart from being COVID-19 positive, she was also suffering from pneumonia. She was kept in COVID ICU of SMCH. However, she succumbed to the infection on Tuesday. The other deceased was identified as Himangshu Dey (70) from Amraghat in Cachar. He was also admitted in the ICU of SMCH. However, he too breathed his last on Tuesday. With this, the death toll in Cachar district due to COVID-19 has gone upto 11.

As regards screening, in the last 24 hours, 141 patients were screened at SMCH. 503 samples were collected. 11 persons tested positive at SMCH in the last 24 hours (RTPCR). In the last 24 hours, 18 patients were admitted and 20 of them discharged from SMCH.At present, there are 136 patients admitted in the Covid ward, 12 in ICU and 3 in ventilation. This was informed by Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH.

On Wednesday, 89 fresh COVID-19 positive cases have been reported from Hailakandi district, taking the total tally to 1476. Hailakandi witnessed a total of 2,843 tests conducted under Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) on Wednesday, the highest so far on a single day. Health authorities here disclosed that of the 2,843 RAT tests carried out under the state’s special drive for mission 100k, 86 have been found positive. 186 RAT tests were conducted at Dholeswari Point with 14 tested positive, 720 at Katlicherra BPHC with 17 positive cases, 633 tests conducted at Lala BPHC with eight cases, 636 at Algapur BPHC with 14 cases, 260 at Kalinagar BPHC with detection of 16 cases, 306 at Urban Centres with 14 cases and 102 tests conducted at SK Roy designated COVID Civil Hospital with two positive cases. There are 415 active cases.

Karimganj district registered its biggest single day spike of 141 new COVID-19 positive cases on Wednesday. The health department has appealed to people to come voluntarily for testing. Rapid Antigen tests were conducted in many parts of the district.

Apart from the valley, a total of 4593 persons tested positive in Assam on Wednesday, thereby taking the state tally to 68,999. As of now, there are 21,626 active cases in the state. Meanwhile, 2136 patients were also discharged from across the state during the day. With this, a total of 47,209 persons were discharged in Assam. Moreover, during the day, 6 persons died due to COVID-19 in Assam, thereby taking the death tally to 161.

India has registered 60,962 new cases in past 24 hours with 834 new deaths on Wednesday. The total case tally now stands at 23,29,638. India has more than 2.2 million confirmed coronavirus infections, the third highest tally after the United States and Brazil. The confirmed number of coronavirus cases in the world has crosses 20 million, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Coronavirus cases in India have continued to see a spike in the past few days, breaching a new mark every other day.
