Deadlock ends, Assam University to function normally from Thursday: Rajdeep Roy

EC Meeting to decide on Milon's rustication after he tenders apology on Thursday

February 19: “After talks with both the agitating students, the officials of Assam University and the district administration, the 10-day long deadlock has finally come to an end. Normal functioning of the University will resume from Thursday,” said Silchar MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy. He was addressing the students on Friday night after attending a meeting of all the stake holders of the varsity.

Dr. Roy said, “The information of the agitation reached the ears in Delhi. I was asked to speak to the stakeholders and find out a amicable solution. We held a more than 2 hours meeting at the University Guest House at the late hours of Wednesday evening. We have come to a decision that from tomorrow onwards to the satisfaction of all the stakeholders, gates will be opened and classes will resume.”

As far as the demands of the Students’ Union, MP Roy said, “We have taken the initiative and responsibility to see to it that the educational career graph of Milon Das is not hampered in any way. This is the word given by all of us together.”

As regards few FIRs lodged, he said, “We have requested the Assam police not to take any action temporarily on these for the next few weeks. If the conduct of each and everybody (right from the students concerned and all the others) are absolutely fine, then we are going to make formal compromise note to the police and withdraw all the cases.”

On his personal capacity as the Member of Parliament from Silchar, Dr. Rajdeep Roy said, “This is your proud privilege that you are the students of this university. When I was a school student at Silchar and even as a college student, we did a lot of agitation for the establishment of this great university. By the Act of Indian Parliament in 1994, this university was established along with the Tezpur University. It is very painful to note that today we are lagging behind in the ranking system and it hurts me very much. When I go to other parts of the country and visit different universities there, I too aspire that our own Assam University should also march forward in its truest stride.”

Meanwhile, sources in the university reveled that the meeting which took place in the guest house of the varsity on Wednesday ate evening was attended by the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Registrar in-charge and other high officials. The Vice Chancellor was, however, not present in the said meeting. It was learnt that Milon Das was also present in the said meeting. The meeting was chaired by MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy. As regards the issue of rustication of Milon Das, it was agreed upon by all including Milon himself that he will give an apology letter to the Vice Chancellor.

Further, the University authorities have decided to convene an emergent Executive Council Meeting on Thursday, wherein the apology letter which would be written by Milon Das will be placed. The quantum of punishment of Milon Das will be decided in Thursday’s EC Meeting on the basis of the his apology letter.
