R. G. Kar incident : sit-in protest in Gurucharan College

way2barak, August 19 : The Kiron Sashi Women’s Cell of Gurucharan College, Silchar convened a sit-in protest on Monday against the brutal rape-murder incident at R. G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Faculty members, administrative staff along with the students of the college participated in the protest that began at 11 a.m. in the main campus of the college. In a significant demonstration against a heinous act that has sent shockwaves across the country, the staff and students of G.C. College joined together to express their collective outrage and demand justice for the victim. President of Kiron Sashi Women’s Cell, Dr. Seba Roy, IQAC Coordinator, Dr. Apratim Nag, Head of Political Science, Dr. Swarupa Bhattacharjee and Librarian Dr. Sehnara Begum Choudhury delivered speeches strongly condemning acts of violence against women and they underscored the need for gender sensitisation and meaningful reforms that would effectively ensure women’s safety in the workplace. Students as well as alumni of the college also presented their viewpoints on the incident while demanding expedited investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators. On this day, all teachers and participating students wore black badges as symbol of solidarity and mourning.
