Cyclonic storm Yaas: DDMA Cachar puts response forces on alert mode

May 24: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday morning said that Cyclone Yaas is going to intensify into a ‘Severe Cyclonic Storm’ in the next 24 hours and issued a rainfall warning for West Bengal and Odisha. It is in this context that a letter from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) was addressed to all Deputy Commissioners on Monday of light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in view of cyclonic storm Yaas lashing East Central Bay of Bengal on 26 & 27 May, 2021. The district administration were directed to keep vigil in the riverine and flood prone areas and also to keep their response teams ready.

It is in this backdrop that the Executive Magistrate, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Cachar issued a letter to all Heads of State Government departments in the district on 25 May. The letter stated, “in view of the Cyclonic Strom “Yaas” over East Central Bay of Bengal issued by Ministry of Home Affairs, DM Division (National Emergency Response Centre) GOI dated 24th May, 2021 regarding Light to Moderate Rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on 26th May & 27th May, 2021. You are requested to keep vigil in the riverine and flood prone areas under your jurisdiction within the Cachar District and be alert for any response and relief operation.”
