874 cases registered, 1,493 traffickers arrested & drugs worth ₹163.58 cr seized in Assam since 10 May

July 19: The war on drugs launched by Assam Police on the direction of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is going on unabated in Assam. CM Dr Sarma stated, “The war on drugs is picking momentum everyday and going to set an example in the fight against the global menace.”

Since the taking over of reigns of Assam by Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP government on 10 May, 2021, a total of 874 cases were registered, 1,493 traffickers arrested & drugs worth ₹163.58 cr seized in the state. Recently, under the orders of the Chief Ministers, huge quantity of seized drugs were burnt in a bonfire. Minister Pijush Hazarika, Keshab Mahanta; MLA Jitu Goswami , MLA Rupak  Sarmah, MLA Sashi Kanta Das and  Assam Police DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta were present in the drugs disposal programme.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday in Barhampur, Nagaon destroyed a total of 58,000 seized cough syrups. Also, other seized contraband items including heroin, opium and ganja worth Rs. 36 crore were burned in the drugs disposal programme. “The blazing flames of seized drugs display our government’s commitment of Drugs Mukta Assam. We shall not tolerate Assam being used as a transit route for psychotropic substances & our youths falling prey to contraband drugs,” stated the Chief Minister.
