Black ink smeared on Bengali signboards by Bir Lachit Sena in Guwahati

Oct. 23: In what seems to be an eye for an eye, Bir Lachit Sena now came forward and allegedly smeared black ink over Bengali signboards in the heart of Guwahati city on Saturday. The Guwahati unit of Bir Lachit Sena said that all banners and hoarding in Assam should contain Assamese and not Bengali.

Earlier, Barak Democratic Youth Front (BDYF) along with another organisation allegedly smeared black ink on a government hoarding that was written in the Assamese language near Silchar Railway Station. This erupted a huge controversy in the state. It was then that Shrinkhal Chaliha, the leader of the Veer Lachit Sena, categorically stated that they would not tolerate such anti-Assamese activities in Assam. Following this, the Cachar district administration lodged an FIR against the BDYF organization at Silchar Police Station. FIR’s were also lodged against Pradip Dutta Roy of Barak Democratic Front (BDF) in two police stations of Guwahati.

The incident of smearing black ink on Bengali hoarding in Guwahati seemed to be a “tit for tat” action allegedly by Bir Lachit Sena. However, till the filing of this report, no complaint was filed against this act.

However, after the hoarding controversy in Silchar, the Cachar district administration on Saturday has replaced the Assamese language hoardings with hoardings written in Bengali near Silchar Railway Station.
