Delhi burning: Section 144 imposed, death toll reaches 13, RAF on high alert

February 25: The death toll in the wave of violence that broke out and spread in areas of Northeast Delhi rose to 13 – including a policeman on Tuesday, with more than 150 reported injured. Stone-throwing between rival groups, arson and vandalism on Tuesday marked unrelenting violence over citizenship law protests for more than 24 hours. Mobs carrying lathis roamed the streets of northeast Delhi, attacking shops and burning vehicles.

Late in the evening, curfew was imposed at Maujpur, Jaffarabad, Chandbagh and Karawal Nagar. Shoot at sight orders in parts of northeast Delhi were also issued. Also, police sources said the anti-CAA protest site in the troubled area had been “cleared”. Head constable Rattan Lal, who died in the violence in Delhi on Monday, was laid to rest on Tuesday in the presence of senior officers, including Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik. Lal’s family, which received the body at the mortuary late in the afternoon, said he died of a gunshot injury.

As violence continued on Tuesday, the Union Home Ministry drafted in IPS officer SN Srivastava as the new Delhi Police Special Commissioner (Law and Order) The Rapid Action Force was also kept on high alert. Acid, knives and pistols were used to spread havoc. NSA Ajit Doval takes stock of situation in North East Delhi. All private and government schools in Northeast Delhi will remain closed on Wednesday and CBSE board exams scheduled in centres in the these areas postponed.
