Big Statement: ‘NRC is a game played by all political parties,’ says ex-CJI Ranjan Gogoi

Feb. 12: The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a game in Assam, which has been running for 50 years. Speaking at the India Today Conclave East 2021 in Kolkata, former Chief Justice of India and Rajya Sabha MP Ranjan Gogoi said on Thursday. The Supreme Court under Ranjan Gogoi played an instrumental role in getting the NRC for Assam published. However, once published, all political parties found it inconvenient and demanded changes.

“There is a book in Assam called, ‘Game called NRC’. The NRC is a big game between politicians. Neither the Congress nor the BJP wants NRC. The court can only do so much and it has done that. The NRC is a vision document. It is a document for the future,” Gogoi said. On the question of NRC across the country, Gogoi said that at the moment, a state needs NRC and it is not happening there. In such a situation, where is the NRC question for the entire country? You have been struggling for NRC in a state for 40-50 years.

The ex-CJI further said, “The illegal immigrants are told by one party that we will protect you if you vote for us and the other political party tells indigenous people that migrants are the biggest threat to you and we will expel them.”
