Assam University Observes Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s Birth Anniversary with Solemn Ceremony

Way2barak, May 14 : The Dr. Ambedkar Chair of Assam University, Silchar, celebrated the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. B. R. Ambedkar today at the Chair’s newly established premises. The commemorative programme began at 1:15 PM and was marked by solemnity, scholarly reflection, and active student participation.
Prof. Rajive Mohan Panth, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Assam University, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and chaired the session. He was joined on the dais by Prof. Debotosh Chakraborty, Chair Professor (In-Charge), while other dignitaries, including Prof. Anup Kumar Dey (Dean, Students’ Welfare), Prof. Himadri Sekhar Das (Head, Dept. of Physics), Prof. Saugata Nath (Head, Dept. of English), Dr. Swarnadeep Biswas, Dr. Bishwa Ranjan Roy, Dr. Amit Kumar Das, and Ranjit Das, were present among the audience along with Ph.D. scholars and postgraduate students.

The ceremony began with the lighting of the lamp and floral tributes offered to Dr. Ambedkar’s portrait by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Chair Professor, and other dignitaries. An inaugural song was soulfully presented by Dr. Maumita Nath, Assistant Professor, Dr. Ambedkar Chair.
Prof. Chakraborty delivered an inaugural address, highlighting various dimensions of Dr. Ambedkar’s life and vision. Dr. Maumita Nath explained that the celebration, customarily held in April, was deferred by a month due to Panchayat election duties and the recent relocation of the Chair to a new building.

The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, in his address, presented a thought-provoking and insightful talk on Dr. Ambedkar and commended the Dr. Ambedkar Chair for organizing such a meaningful programme. He thanked the young speakers who had come from different institutions of Silchar to share their reflections.He also expressed his appreciation for the Indian Army’s valiant efforts during Operation Sindoor on that occasion.

The event also saw participation from five young speakers representing local schools and colleges: Uday Chakraborty (Budhurail High School), Oishee Jyoti (Don Bosco School), Pushpa Dev and Dhrubajyoti Das (Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, Borojalenga), and Debanjali Nath (Gurucharan College, Silchar). Each delivered a concise tribute to Dr. Ambedkar’s enduring legacy.
A poster exhibition featuring 30 creative entries on the theme “Life and Works of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar” was also organized, showcasing the artistic and intellectual enthusiasm of students from various schools in Silchar.
One of the key moments of the event was the inauguration of a library dedicated to Dr. Ambedkar, unveiled by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor. The library houses a rich collection of his writings, scholarly works, and a replica of the Constitution of India.
A new book titled “Ambedkar: A Visionary for India,” edited by Dr. Maumita Nath and Prof. Debotosh Chakraborty, was also unveiled during the event.
The programme concluded with a screening of a video on Operation Sindoor, paying homage to the Indian Army’s bravery and their victories in the fight against terrorism.
The event was anchored by Anandita Singh, research scholar of the Dr. Ambedkar Chair. The vote of thanks was delivered by Bishal Das, fellow research scholar, marking the end of a successful and heartfelt commemoration.
