Assam returns back materials seized from ‘illegal construction site’ of the Mizos

Aug. 22: Tension broke out again between Assam and Mizoram when on Friday and Saturday, Mizo miscreants backed by Mizoram IR Batallion tried to construct a culvert at Kochurthol area of Hailakandi. On getting this information, a police team from Ramnathpur in Hailakandi went to the spot and prohibited the Mizos to do such construction works. Some construction materials were also seized by the Assam Police.

Following this, a case has been registered against Assam police in Mizoram’s Bairabi police station for alleged theft of construction materials. Kolasib Deputy Commissioner in a letter to his Hailakandi counterpart in Assam alleged that Assam Police personnel has stolen construction materials.

On Sunday, the construction materials which were seized by the Assam Police were returned to Mizoram as a mark of friendly gesture. Police Super of Hailakandi, Gaurav Upadhyay said that Mizos were attempting to build a culvert at Kachurthal on the Assam side of the border on Friday. However, H Lalthlangliana, District Magistrate of Kolasib maintained that “Assam Police came to our side and took away around 5 quintals of road from a place where a bridge construction was undertaken to connect main road with the paddy field owned by Pu Ch. Chhunga, the first Chief Minister of Mizoram.”

After the seized materials were returned to Mizoram, Kolasib DM stated that the case registered against the Assam Pollice would be withdrawn. Further the SP of Kolasib V Ralte said that following the return of the seized construction materials by Assam Police, Mizoram would withdraw its cops from the site.
