Silchar’s Amarjit Selected for India’s Sepak Takraw World Cup Squad

way2barak, May 14 : Cachar-based Sepak Takraw player O. Amarjit Singha has been selected for the Indian national team for the upcoming ISTAF Sepak Takraw World Cup to be held in Malaysia. The confirmation was made through an official communication from the Sepak Takraw Federation of India (STFI). The STFI informed the Assam Sepak Takraw Association about Amarjit’s inclusion in the national squad through a formal letter. His selection came on the back of an impressive performance in the men’s category of the All India Inter-University Sepak Takraw Championship, held in Silchar in March this year. The tournament was hosted by Assam University.

Amarjit attended the national coaching camp recently and left for Malaysia with the Indian team from Delhi on May 13. The ISTAF Sepak Takraw World Cup is scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur from May 16 to 23. Organised by the International Sepak Takraw Federation (ISTAF), the World Cup is regarded as one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport.

Established in 1982, ISTAF is the apex international governing body for Sepak Takraw. The tournament is conducted in a Grand Prix-style format to enhance the global appeal and competitiveness of the sport. Karimganj Sepak Takraw Association secretary Emad Uddin and President Pinak Dutta congratulated Amarjit on his achievement. Assam University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajiv Mohan Pant described Amarjit’s selection as a recognition of the sporting talent emerging from the Northeast. He said, university-level sports programmes are producing athletes of international calibre, and Amarjit is a shining example of that progress.

It may be mentioned that India won a bronze medal in Sepak Takraw at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. The sport will also feature in the upcoming Asian Games to be held in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, from September 19. Ahead of the continental event, the Indian team is set to participate in several international tournaments, including the World Cup, raising hopes for Amarjit to represent the country on more major stages in the future.
