Alarming! Water level of Barak at Annapurna Ghat rising, reaches 21.42 mt at 2 PM on Wednesday

May 18: Due to incessant rainfall since the last few days, the water level of river Barak started to rise. From Wednesday morning, the water level at Annapurna Ghat was increasing rapidly. Since 10 AM on Wednesday, the water level at Annapurna Ghat was increasing by 6 cm per hour. However, the level was rising by 7 cm per hour from 12 noon. At present the level is rising by 4 cm per hour.

As per report received from Assam Water Resource Department, river Barak at Annapurna Ghat, Silchar at 12 noon on Wednesday was flowing much above the danger level and was recorded at 21.42 metres. The danger level at this point is 19.83 metre. The water level was was rising by 4 cm per hour. This is the highest level of water (21.42 mt) at Annapurna Ghat recorded this year.

The highest flood level at this point was recorded at 21.763 on 11 September, 2007.

Meanwhile, water from river Barak has overflown through Uttar Krishnapur Part I and has inundated the Silchar Mizoram road at Nagatilla, Silchar. Near Sonabarighat bypass, vehicular traffic has ceased to move. Long queue of vehicles were seen to be stranded there since last 2 hours. The water level at Nagatilla main road was gradually increasing.

Apart from this portion, river water was also entering from rail colony side of Annapurna Ghat.  Also water was reported to enter along the Tarapur Shib bari road area.
