After long suspense, Assam NRC data comes back online

February 22: Finally, ending all speculations, data related to Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) which suddenly disappeared from its official website, was restored back on Saturday. The data went offline due to non-renewal of contract with the IT firm Wipro since 12 February, 2020.

Hitesh Dev Sarma, the NRC state coordinator, confirmed that the data is available on the cloud since midnight of February 21st, 2020. The status of 3.3 crore applicants to the Assam NRC — published on August 31, 2019 — was inaccessible due to non-renewal of IT Services Contract with Wipro, the company which looks after the online NRC data.

The data contained the details of the final list of NRC which was published on 31 August, 2019. The final NRC, aimed at creating a bonafide list of Indian citizens in Assam as per the Assam Accord, excluded 19,06,657 names out of 3,30,27,661 applicants.
