Deserting Congress, Rupjyoti Kurmi finally joins BJP

June 21: A prominent leader from Tea Tribe Community & 4-term MLA from Assam finally switched over to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. The joining ceremony of Rupjyoti Kurmi was a grand affair which was chaired by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma himself. Later on, taking to his twitter handle, CM Assam wrote, “We welcome Sri Rupjyoti Kurmi to BJP family. A prominent leader from Tea – Tribe Community & 4-term MLA, he has always been working for uplift of poor & development of the region. @BJP4Assam shall immensely gain from his experience. Best wishes.”

ImageEarlier, on 18 May, MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi tendered his resignation to state Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary on Friday. Present there was State cabinet minister Pijush Hazarika. Later on, speaking with newsmen, he expressed dissatisfaction with top Congress leadership. He alleged that the leadership is reluctant to listen to the young party leaders. Terming the ‘present situation in Congress as worsening’, Kurmi said, “Rahul Gandhi is unable to shoulder the leadership of the party.”

Rupjyoti Kurmi, who was an MLA of Mariani constituency of Assam sharply criticised about the Congress’ pre-poll alliance with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) during the recently concluded Assam Assembly Elections and termed it a “blunder”. Sources in the BJP hinted that atleast two more Congress MLA’s from Assam will very soon switch over to the BJP.
