Rare case of a baby weighing more than 5 kg born at SM Dev Civil Hospital, Silchar

June 18: A baby boy weighing 5 kg 200 gms was born at SM Dev Civil Hospital, Silchar. Jaya Das, a resident of Kanakpur Part II gave birth to this baby on Thursday. While the normal weight of a child is 3 kg at the time of birth, there are a few instances where mothers give birth to large babies. However, such instances are very rare in the country.

“Usually, if the estimated weight is more than 4.5 kg, we recommend a Caesarean section,” said a doctor at the hospital. The surgery team of Civil Hospital was led by Dr Afsar Alam and assisted by sister Roselyn, Manjurul and Dr Rajat.
