Emphasis to be paid on conservation of nature, says Prof Parthankar Choudhury in Women’s College Webinar

July 5: Since the Vedic period, emphasis in India was put on conservation of nature. This was opined by Prof Parthankar Choudhury, former Head, Department of Ecology & Environment Science, Assam University during a Webinar entitled “Women & Environment” organised to commemorate World Environment Day on 5 June, 2021. The online talk was conducted in the Google Meet platform in which apart from the teachers a large number of students also participated.

Prof. Parthankar Choudhury an expert in Wildlife Research during his talk cited examples of numerous women in different parts of the country involved in different environmental project. In a lucid manner, he explained about the concept of conservation of nature. During the day, the teachers of Women’s College, Silchar inspired the students and in return they undertook plantation drive in their respective house.

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June and is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment. The pandemic that the world has been dealing with for almost 1.5 years now has shown how disastrous the consequences of ecosystem loss can be. By shrinking the area of natural habitat for animals, we have created ideal conditions for pathogens. The fact remains that only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the collapse of biodiversity. The theme for World Environment Day 2021 is ‘Ecosystem Restoration’.
