DC Cachar pays rich tribute to the 11 language martyrs

May 19: Amid the ongoing pandemic, Barak Valley paid deep tribute to the language martyrs in the morning on 19 May. As like 2020, this year too, the day was observed in a low-key manner due to the coronavirus pandemic abiding Covid-19 protocols.

Along with Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli visited Silchar Railway Station at 6.30 in the morning and offered floral tribute at the martyr’s column there. From there, DC Jalli along with the other dignitaries went to Silchar crematorium and thereafter reached Gandhi Bagh. In these two places too, the Deputy Commissioner paid rich tribute at the martyr’s memorial.

Expressing her views, DC Jalli said that the supreme sacrifice made by them for the preservation of their mother tongue is indeed inspiring for generations not only in Silchar, but all throughout the globe. Language, she said is the medium of expression and for that purpose, mother tongue is the vehicle through which every person is able to express his deep inner thoughts. It also gives a sense of identity to a community. It is in times of crisis that the linguistic affinity gives a zeal to the factor of unification and nation building. She further added that the present Covid situation can also be overcome by exhibiting such fighting spirit.

Meanwhile, the Sammilito Sanskritik Mancha, Silchar, a conglomeration of numerous cultural organisations of the district also felicitated the Deputy Commissioner with the ‘Unisher Padak’ (a memento of 19 May). Accepting the honour, DC Jalli expressed her thankfulness and wished that the indomitable spirit exhibited by the 11 language martyrs inspires posterity to lend their hand in every aspect of nation building including the fight against this pandemic.
