Barak Valley registers 484 Covid +ve cases on Saturday; 2 deaths at SMCH

Active cases 1,753 in Barak Valley

May 8: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Saturday, the number of fresh cases in the valley increased once again. A total of 484 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley during the day. It needs mention here that on Friday, Barak Valley registered 346 positive cases.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Saturday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 312 positive cases   (It was 198 on Friday)
  • Karimganj: 112 positive cases (It was 104 on Friday)
  • Hailakandi: 60 positive cases (It was 44 on Friday)

A total of 312 new cases of COVID-19 was reported on Saturday in Cachar. As per the updated data, a total of 2,631 Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) were done, out of which, a total of 198 persons were found positive in Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), whereas 114 more were detected positive in RT-PCR Test. This was informed by Dr. Ibrahim Ali Ahmed, District Surveillance Officer (DSO), IDSP, Cachar on Saturday night. With this, the total number of Covid cases in 2021 reached 2,545 in 2021, whereas during the year, 1,545 patients were discharged. There are 981 active cases in Cachar at present.

The death of Covid-19 positive patients is continuing in Cachar. On Saturday, the district witnessed another such death. A 60 year old male Mahibur Rahaman Barbhuiyan from Panchayat Road in Silchar was suffering from cough and sob for last 4 days. He was also diabetic & hypertensive and was on medications when admitted at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) on 3 May. He expired at 6.00 pm on 8 May.

Jyostna Chakraborty, a 54 years old female from Tarapur, Silchar with history of travel from Kolkata one week back prior to admission, known hypertensive, was admitted on 26 April at SMCH with fever and shortness of breath for two days. Ultimately, she expired on 8 May at 8 pm.

Hailakandi registered 60 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday. Of the 60 active cases detected on Saturday, 59 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and 01 found positive in RT-PCR test. The district has altogether 302 active COVID-19 cases. During the day, 1,323 RAT tests and 23 RT-PCR tests were done. 23 persons were discharged on Saturday. It needs mention here that 44 persons were found positive on Friday.

Karimganj registered highest ever spike in a single day with detection of 112 fresh COVID-19 cases on Saturday, pushing the coronavirus tally in the district to 5,069. Of the 112 active cases detected on Saturday, 106 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test and six under RT-PCR. It needs mention here that on Friday, 104 positive cases were detected in Karimganj.

28 jail inmates of District Jail have been infected with COVID-19 on Friday and six earlier, taking the total number of positive cases to 34. The district has altogether 470 active COVID-19 cases while 15 patients have been discharged from hospital and home isolation on Friday. 1,294’swab samples were collected on Saturday. Altogether 2,38,539 samples have been tested so far. The district has currently 13 active containment zones.

On Saturday, out of 65,140 tests, 5,756 persons were detected as COVID-19 positive in Assam. This is the highest single day spike in the number of Covid cases in Assam in 2021. With this, the state tally of coronavirus has now gone upto 2,89,069. The positivity rate in the state is 8.84 percent. Kamrup (Metro) district registered 1,543 positive cases during the day. Further, on Saturday, 50 more persons lost their lives in the state due to COVID-19. With this, the death toll in the state reached 1,628. On Saturday, 3,053 patients were discharged in Assam. With this, a total of 2,49,295 patients got cured and were subsequently discharged

Further, during the day, 50 patients died in Assam due to COVID-19. Out of the 50 deceased, 16 are from Kamrup Metro; 6 from Kamrup Rural, 4 each from Dibrugarh & Nalbari; 2 each from Cachar, Barpeta, Dhubri Nagaon & Sonitpur; 1 each from Baksha, Bongaigaon, Darrang, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Kokhrajhar, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Tinsukia & Udalguri. The death tally of the state now stands at 1,628.

Meanwhile, India on Saturday recorded 4,187 coronavirus-related deaths, the highest ever since the pandemic broke out last year, as a fierce second wave continued to overwhelm the country’s hospitals. With this, the toll rose to 2,38,270, data from the health ministry showed.

The country recorded 4,01,078 new cases in 24 hours, taking the tally of infections in the country to 2,18,92,676. This is the fourth time since May 1 when the count rose by more than 4 lakh.
