Karim Uddin of AIUDF bags the Sonai seat by defeating Aminul Haque of BJP

May 2: After a nail biting contest for the whole day, finally Karim Uddin Barbhuiya (Saju) of AIUDF had the last smile in Sonai constituency. He defeated BJP’s sitting MLA cum Deputy Speaker of Assam Assembly, Aminul Haque Laskar. As per the data updated up Election Commission of India (ECI) at 9.20 PM, Karim Uddin got 41,795 votes. BJPs Aminul Haque Laskar got 32,780 votes, whereas Ashish Halder (IND) got 9729 votes. This number will increase as the postal ballots were yet to be added in their respective accounts.

Speaking to newsmen, an elated Karim Uddin Barbhuiya (Saju) said, “I would like to thank all the people of Sonai cutting across community or party lines for supporting me. I would like to thank all the AIUDF & Congress workers. Especially, my thanks are due to the women of Sonai who stood beside me. The youths, students all who are not related to politics gave their wholehearted support to me. I also offer my thanks to our party supremo Badar Uddin Ajmal and the people of Sonai.
