Friday Scare: Biggest single day spike of 177 COVID-19 cases in Assam

May 29: Friday was indeed a very tough day for Assam as the coronavirus positive cases in the state saw its all time highest spike till now. A total of 177 COVID-19 positive cases were reported from various parts of the state on Friday, which sent a chill of horror throughout the state. As people stranded outside the state started to pour in, the number of coronavirus cases has been on the rise. It is quite obvious, when people from the hotspots are travelling back to their home states, there will definitely be a spike in the number of positive cases. The total number of COVID-19 positive cases in Assam crossed the 1000-mark on  29 May and stands at 1057. However, the number of active cases are 925.

From one positive case in 31 March in Assam, it has now gone upto 1057. A hundred cases a day seems to have become the norm of the day. The total number of COVID-19 positive cases in the state was 880 on 28 May. But on 29 May, the numbers went on increasing almost the whole day and reached 1057. Out of this, there are 925 active cases in the state.  All eyes seemed to be on the twitter page of State Health Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. Here is the complete sequence of how the positive cases were reported on 29 May.

  1. 29 May, 11.45 AM: 30 positive cases: 16 Golaghat, 6 Karimganj, 2 Lakhimpur, 2 Cachar, 2 Hailakandi, 2 Karbi Anglong.
  2. 29 May, 06.20 PM: 25 positive cases: 1 Kamrup M, 8 Hojai, 6 air travellers.
  3. 29 May, 09.40 PM: 89 positive cases: 30 Kamrup, 17 Tinsukia, 14 Guwahati, 14 Dhubri, 10 Cachar, 4 Dhemaji.
  4. 29 May, 11.59 PM:  33 positive cases: 11 Golaghat, 11 Biswanath Chariali, 9 Udalguri, 2 Darrang.

However, on Friday, 22 patients were also discharged from different hospitals in the state:

  • 06 discharged from GMCH
  • 12 discharged from MMCH
  • 03 discharged from SMCH
  • 01 discharged from JMCH

As the numbers are soaring up at an alarming rate, it’s essential for the people to stay at home as far as possible, follow social distancing and hygiene norms. Further, to stay safe, people must also follow government advisory of wearing face masks and washing hands frequently with soap.
