ULFA (I) claims responsibility of R. Day blasts in Assam

January 26: The United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) has claimed responsibility for the blasts that rocked upper Assam on Republic Day morning within a span of 15 minutes. The ULFA(I), in a statement signed by Lt Joy Asom of its Publicity Department, claimed that all the four blasts were carried out by the outfit.

The Paresh Barua-led ULFA(I) had called for a boycott of the Republic Day celebrations in the region. In the statement issued by ULFA (I), it was stated, “The serial bomb blasts occurred in three districts of Assam on January 26 during the celebration of so-called Republic Day by the colonial state of India were carried out by ULFA (I)’s United Liberation Force.”

Taking to Twitter, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the blasts and vowed to take strong action against the culprits.

Four low-intensity blasts, two of them triggered by Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), took place in Assam on Sunday morning as the nation was celebrating its 71st Republic Day. There were no casualties or injuries. The first blast was heard at Teok Haat in Sonari under Charaideo District, the second one occurred Ain the oil town of Duliajan near Duliajan Police Station in Dibrugarh district. The two other blasts were reported in Dibrugarh — at Marwari patty near Gurudwara on A T Road and close to Circuit House in Graham Bazaar.
