January 20: The Union Home Ministry in a reply to an RTI query has accepted that it has “no information” about the ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ — a term used on many occasions by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Minister Amit Shah and other Ministers in the BJP-led National Democratic (NDA) government to attack opponents.

An RTI, filed by activist Saket Gokhale, received a one-line reply nearly a month later, which raised a question on the ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ mentioned by Amit Shah during his address at a public event in New Delhi. In his speech, the former BJP president had said that the ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ of Delhi “needs to be taught a lesson and punished”.

During the peak of protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, Home Minister Amit Shah blamed the tukde-tukde gang for the violence. “I want to say that it’s time to punish the tukde-tukde gang led by the Congress. They are to be blame for the violence in the city. People in Delhi should punish them,” the home minister had said.

The RTI filed before the Union home ministry sought to know, “What is the origin of tukde tukde gang? Why it is not banned under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA)? Who are its members?” Tweeting the response that he received from the home ministry, Gokhale wrote: “The “tukde tukde gang” does not officially exist & is merely a figment of Amit Shah’s imagination.”

The term ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ which can be loosely translated as a gang of people out to divide India was first coined during a controversy that broke out in February 2016 at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where the title was given to the group of people allegedly raising ‘anti-India’ slogans. An alumnus of JNU, external affairs minister S Jaishankar had said recently that when he was studying, “there was no Tukde Tukde Gang.” PM Modi have mentioned this phrase in his speeches during rallies to lash out at the opposition, including Congress’ Rahul Gandhi.
