Mass demonstration to be held against destruction of green & erecting jungle of concrete at Gandhi Bagh on 9 November

November 7: Save Gandhi Bagh, Save Green– Serious of movements are going on raising this slogan. As a part of this environmental movement, mass signature campaign was also undertaken very recently. Meanwhile, a delegation of Sammilito Sanskritik Mancha on Tuesday met the Deputy Commissioner and registered the grievance against the decision of Silchar Municipal Board to convert the green Gandhi Bagh into a jungle of concrete.

On the basis of objections and complaints lodged by various organisations as regards construction of Amusement Park, star hotel, shopping complex at Gandhi Bagh, Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri has constituted a one man enquiry committee to look into this entire subject. Silchar Municipal Chairman Niharendra Narayan Thakur was asked to appear before the enquiry committee on Friday.

On the face of it, democratic organistions and conscious citizens of the town has given a clarion call for mass demonstration near Gandhi Bagh on 9 November, 2019 at 3 PM. Speaking to way2barak, one of the social activists, Arindam Deb said, “Gandhi Bagh, the lungs of SIlchar town engulfed with the memory of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes, enriched with the ashes of the language martyr;s in the altar, glorified memories of many historical happenings and also having trees and water reservoir has been sold to a private construction company named Assam Progressive Developers Limited (ALDL) by the Silchar Municipal Chairperson and his inner coterie for their vested interests.”

Mr. Deb further said that, “We will be assembling near the historical Gandhi Bagh on Friday to register our protest against the destruction of greenery and the selling of public property to private ownership for commercial purpose. We would appeal to all to join the mass demonstration on Friday so that the lungs of this town does not become malignant. We want to bequeath an undying flow of oxygen to our posterity so that a healthy social environment can prevail at Silchar in the days to come.”

It needs mention here that around 21 bighas of land in Gandhi Bagh was given on lease to Assam Progressive Developer’s Limited (APDL) for construction of Amusement Park, star hotel and shopping complex. The foundation stone of the said project was laid by state urban minister Pijush Hazarika amidst wide protest on 5 September, 2019. At present, the construction company APDL has started the work of earth filling in the proposed construction site at Gandhi Bagh.
