Chamber of Commerce gives financial help to the families of deceased at Meherpur

November 6: A speeding truck ran over several people in a Kali Puja immersion procession in Meherpur area of Silchar on 30 October. Two young girls, Sonali Das and Pompy Dey were crushed to death and 19 others were injured. They all belong to Durgabari area of Meherpur, Silchar. MP Silchar Dr. Rajdeep Roy and Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque Laskar handed over ex-gratia of ₹ 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, a delegation of the South Assam Chamber of Commerce visited the house of the deceased. The delegation led by Vivek Poddar, President of the South Assam chapter of Assam Chamber of Commerce was also accompanied by Mridul Majumdar, Rudra Narayan Gupta among others. Vivek Poddar handed over an amount of Rs.35,000 each to both the families of the deceased.

Speaking during the occasion Mridul Majumdar said, “We know that we won’t be able to compensate the loss which both the families suffered due to the demise of their daughters. We are here to share your pain. We have with us owners of 3 nursing homes. We will also appeal to those injured that if they are not satisfied with the treatment of Medical College and want to get further treatment, than our collegues who are owners of nursing homes will do their best to help them.” He, however, refused to discuss anything political centering the death of the girls and the incidents that happened after that.
