Krishna Janmashtami celebrated across nation with pomp & devotion

Krishna Janmashtami, also simply called Janmashtami, is the day when Lord Krishna was born. It is observed according to Hindu luni-solar calendar, on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Shrawana of the Hindu Calendar. Devotees celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna through fasting, singing, praying together, preparing and sharing special food, night vigils and visiting Krishna or Vishnu temples. While many temples organise pujas, communities organize dance-drama events called Rasa Lila or Krishna Lila as well.

Children dressed up as Lord Krishna and Radha, take part in several programmes to celebrate Janmashtami. Women draw tiny foot prints outside their house door and kitchen, a symbolism for Lord Krishna’s entry to their home. Krishna is believed to be the eight avatar of Lord Vishnu, who was born in Mathura and grew up in Vrindavan.

Along with the rest of the country, Silchar too has geared up for celebration of Janmashtami. All manjor temples of the town including ISKCON temple, Gopal Akhra, Samsundar, Radhamadhab Akhra, Gouriya Math etc were decorated in a befitting way for the celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna. Special puja will be performed on Monday night in all the temples.
