Cachar College hosts workshop on “ Translation Studies : Retrospect & Prospects”

way2barak, January 25:  A one-day workshop on ‘Translation Studies: Retrospect & Prospects’ was organized by ‘Language, Communication and Soft Skills Committee’ (LCSS) under the aegis of IQAC, Cachar College on Saturday, January 25.

 The ceremony began with the lighting of the lamp. Dr. Sontosh Ranjan Chakraborty, retired head of the Department, English, Cachar College was present as the Resource person of the Workshop. He was felicitated with an ‘Aronai’ and Memento of appriciation. Md Samsuddin, HOD, Department of History and Dr. Sudip Kumar Das, HOD, Department of Bengali of the College were present as Guest of Honour. Welcome speech was delivered by Dr. Shankar Sharma, the Head of Department of Hindi. He spoke on the unique feeling of each language and encouraged the students by an explaining the literal translation and the translation according to sense. Then Md Sams uddin addressed the students about the significance of translation Studies. He said unity in diversity is the keynote of Indian civilization; Therefore, the spirit and culture of a language-speaking people reaches the people of other language groups all over the world through translation.

Dr. Sudip Kumar Das, H.O.D of Bengali, also gave an insight into the importance of language and Human as rational being. People’s thoughts, ideas, customs and culture are exchanged through language. Global cultural exchange is accomplished through translation into different languages.

The invited speaker Dr. Santosh Ranjan Chakraborty expressed valuable opinion about the retrospect and prospects of translation studies. He said that the Bible has been translated into more than three thousand languages around the world. ln the early period religious texts were translated. But later other than religious texts have been translated into many languages. Dante’s ‘Divina Commedia’, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’s ‘Das Capitals’ and ‘Communist Manifesto’ have been translated into many languages and spread its ideology accross the globe. Over the ages humans have traveled to the outer world for livelihood and achieved the art of multilingualism. He highlighted the problems of losing the actual essence in translation from culture to culture. He commented on how India should be proud of being multicultural and multilingual nation. Through acquiring knowledge in different languages, the excellence of human mind is achieved. He explains about the limitations of literal translation. He said, there are many dialectal variations within each language. He analyzed with examples the difference between the pronunciation of Bengali words in Chittagong and Sylhet regions.

Finally, he said that through the practice of translation, human knowledge expands and provincialism, political and linguistic narrowness ends. Therefore, translation works bulids international unity and integrity.

Dr. Padmasree Chakraborty briefly presents the feeling in any language based on direct experience. Sri Birupaksha Paul Chowdhury Assistant Professor from the Department of Zoology share his ideas and talked about the usefulness of translation practice.

The program was hosted by W. Yaiphabi Chanu, a student of English department. Miss . Bidintha Narzary gave the vote of thanks. Nayana Goswami, convenor of the LCSSC, and othe members Dr. Sulekha Singhal, Georgina Khakhlari, Dr.Sandhya Rani Singha, Dr. Maitri Manna, and Arpita Roy successfully conducted the workshop. Along with all Committee members Dr. Neetu Debnath, Raju Brahma, Dr. L Nipamacha Singha, Rupjili Beypi, and other faculties from various Departments were also present. The workshop was attended by students from different language departments of the College.
