Workshop on Non-Parametric Test in Empirical Research witnessed impressive participation at Women’s College
way2barak, June 2 : A one-day workshop on Non Parametric Test in Empirical Research was held at Women’s College Silchar on last Saturday.
Organised by the Department of Economics in collaboration IQAC of the college, the workshop witnessed impressive participation of researchers and faculty members from the region.
Prof Dibyojyoti Bhattacharjee, senior Professor at the Department of Statistics, Assam University Silchar and Dr Avijit Debnath, assistant professor from Department of Economics, Assam University Silchar were the resource persons at the workshop.
Dr Devasree Datta principal in-charge of the college said that this is the first of the series of such academic events to be held in the college in the coming days. She expressed happiness over the initiative taken by the Department of Economics and IQAC and thanked the participants for their spontaneous response to the workshop. She also thanked the resource persons for sharing their valuable knowledge with the participants enriching the knowledge on the subject.
The workshop was split into two technical sessions. Prof Bhattacharjee, in the opening technical session made a lucid approach towards explaining the technical aspects of applying Non-Parametric tests in SPSS. In his words, the rest is simple to understand and the calculations are less time consuming and the approach works on general assumptions for study. In an interactive also threw light on the nominal scale and ordinal scale of measurement and also on the application of the test in studies related to Machine Learning.
In the second session, Dr. Avijit Debnath
explained regression tree which is one of the important and widely used non-parametric tool in empirical research.
Dr. Debnath using hypothetical data gave a hand on training to the participants on the use of non-parametric statistical tool. In the interaction with the participants, Dr Debnath cleared the queries and resolved the issues.
Earlier, Dr Sujoy Das, Head, Department of Economics of the college and also the coordinator of the workshop, in his introductory remarks spoke on the uses and applicability of Non Parametric Test over Parametric test in empirical research areas. Also the participants shared their expectations and experience having attended the workshop and wished for similar workshops to be held in the college in the coming days. Dr Shantanu Das, senior faculty from the Department of Education of the college and coordinator IQAC of the college delivered the vote of thanks.
