Kripanath Mallah writes to PM; raises demand for upgradation of alternative road connecting Silchar & Guwahati passing exclusively through Assam

The proposed road will reduce travel time and save fuel as well: MP Mallah

way2barak, Dec.7: The Silchar- Guwahati National Highway via Meghalaya often remains out of bounds of the people of Assam due to violent clashes. This results in great difficulty for the commuters. It is in this backdrop that MP Karimganj, Kripanath Mallah wrote a letter to PM Modi for upgradation of 2-lane Silchar- Guwahati alternate road.

MP Mallah in his letter to the PM drew his kind attention and intervention for upgradation of the 275 Km alternative road between Silchar & Guwahati to a double lane National Highway. He stated,  “Frequently, Shillong & other places of Meghalaya remains disturbed because of communal ( Locals-outsiders) conflicts and many untoward incidents take place on the Silchar- Shillong- Guwahati highway resulting interruption of vehicular traffic movement that badly affects normal public life in Barak Valley of South Assam, Tripura, Mizoram & part of Manipur.”

It is in this backdrop that MP Mallah wrote, “As such, demand for upgradation of the alternative road connecting Silchar & Guwahati passing exclusively through Assam avoiding Meghalaya State is gaining ground among public. Out of 275 Km proposed road, new construction is to be made only in a 27-km stretch between Harangajao and Turuk. Roads already exist up to Jagiroad in the remaining 258-km portion. Out of this 258-km stretch, the road between Silchar, Balacherra and Harangajao (71 km) is a part of ongoing East West Corridor. Only about 104 Km stretch from Turuk and Sangbor (48 km), Sangbor and Umrangsu (19 km), Umrangshu and Panimur (30 km) and Panimur and Nellie (7 km) needs widening & strengthening.”

He further wrote, “While from Nellie- Jagiroad to Guwahati (72 Km) is a part of existing National Highway. The advantage of the proposed Road (275km) is 45 Km shorter than the Silchar- Shillong-  Guwahati Road (320 km), which will reduce travel time and save fuel as well. In view of the above, your honour is requested kindly to make necessary arrangements for upgradation of the proposed road as new National Highway (NH) for economic growth & infrastructure development of the N.E Region.”
