Border unrest: Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union stops transportation of petroleum products to Meghalaya

way2barak, Nov.25: As the tension between Meghalaya and Assam aftermath of the firing incident along the border continues, only vehicles with Meghalaya’s registration were allowed entry into the state. On the face of it, the Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union has decided to stop the transportation of petroleum products to Meghalaya.

In a letter written to all oil companies on Thursday, Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union stated that its members will not load fuel onto tankers as vehicles with number plates from Assam were being attacked in Meghalaya. “Our members are afraid to go to Ri-Bhoi, Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills districts of Meghalaya for supplying petroleum products,” wrote the union in their letter.

“We have decided not to take any load from today onwards until and unless the Government of Meghalaya assures them of the safety and security of T/T (tank trucks) crews,” added the Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union in their letter.

However, CM of Meghalaya in a tweet wrote, “There is no shortage of petrol and diesel in Meghalaya. Necessary actions have been initiated by the Government to ensure no shortage of stocks and supply. Request all citizens to not resort to panic buying of any essentials.”

On Tuesday, six people were killed and several others injured during an alleged clash between villagers and a security contingent comprising the police and forest guards from Assam. The alleged clash took place in the area bordering the West Karbi Anglong district of Assam and Mukroh village in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills. Among those killed was a forest guard from Assam.
