FIFA bans India, can’t host U-17 women’s World Cup

Aug. 16: In a major setback and embarrassment, FIFA, football’s apex body, has suspended the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect due to “undue influence from third parties”, world soccer’s governing body said. According to FIFA statutes, member federations must be free from legal and political interference in their respective countries. This is the first time the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been banned by FIFA in its 85 year history.

The suspension means that the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022, scheduled to take place in India on 11-30 October 2022, cannot currently be held in India as planned. FIFA is assessing the next steps with regard to the tournament and will refer the matter to the Bureau of the Council if and when necessary.

The suspension letter, signed by FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura, reached Sunando Dhar, acting general secretary of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), early on Tuesday, hours after India celebrated turning 75 as an independent nation.

However, domestic football can continue. The 131st Durand Cup, which kicks off the Indian season, begins in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Reacting to FIFA suspending All India Football Federation (AIFF), former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia said, “Very unfortunate that FIFA has banned Indian football…I feel it’s a very harsh decision of FIFA to ban Indian football.”
