River Barak overtopped; vulnerable breaches at multiple spots including Silchar town area
May 18: The water level of river Barak at Annapurna Ghat and other places are rising alarmingly. In a WT message to the Secretary to the Government of Assam, Water Resource Department, the Executive Engineer of Silchar WR Division on 18 May informed that the dyke system of River Barak at Roypur, Manikpur, Tupkhana, Uttar Krishnapur, Hatirhar, Kasipur, Badripar, Gossainpur, Larsing, Kandigram, Tundurkandi, Jhangerbali are over-topped.
Executive Engineer of Silchar WR Division in the WT Message further stated that apart from these dykes, the rest dykes will also soon be overtopped as the water level is rising alarmingly. “The most vulnerable dykes at Bethukandi area, Berenga area, Ringbund area, Bagadahar area at Silchar town are also in threat,” stated the Executive Engineer. He also mentioned that the situation is under strict vigil and the department is trying its level best to avert breaches and to cope up the situation round the clock.
